Description
Burano, Italy - 02 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
Burano is a population of 2,426 inhabitants, located on four islands of the northern Venice lagoon. It is part of the municipality of Venice and in particular of the Venice-Murano-Burano municipality. It is connected by a bridge to the island of Mazzorbo, which has become a sort of appendix. The town is known for its typical brightly colored houses and for the centuries-old hand-made needlework of Burano lace. The gastronomic traditions are noteworthy; typical sweets are the bussolai. Until 2005 the former Burano district included, in addition to Burano, also Torcello, Mazzorbetto, Mazzorbo and some smaller islands.
One of the most characteristic places of the island is the crossing of 2 canals, where the Three Ponti rise, a characteristic bridge that connects three districts of Burano: San Mauro, San Martino Sinistro and Via Giudecca. Here are joined the most colorful streets of the island, where there are the fishermen's houses and various craft shops.
Burano is known for its handcrafted lace, as well as for its brightly colored houses, although the reason and origin of this custom are not yet clear. A hypothesis suggests that each color would simply be the symbol of a particular family, since even in modern times in Burano there are few but very common surnames. For this reason, in Burano, as in other places in the Veneto region, the sayings are used, the nicknames added to the surname to distinguish one family branch from the other.
