Description
Central Park, New York - 07 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
Central Park is the largest park in the borough of Manhattan, in New York. It is located in Uptown, in the middle between the two residential districts, the Upper West Side and the Upper East Side, which take their name from their position in relation to the park. Even the streets that surround it take its name. It is one of the most popular city parks in the world, thanks to its extras in numerous films and TV series. It is called the green lung of New York.
The park, opened in 1856, was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. Although the park seems natural, it is largely a work of man. The pre-existing land had quarries, valleys, marshes and abusive shacks, so much to discourage the mayor of the time, Alexander Josephyn; however, Vaux came forward with a mandate to the mayor, stating that it was possible to clean up the whole park. Inside there are currently several artificial lakes (the largest of which is the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir), extensive trails, two artificial skating rinks, playgrounds for children, lawns used for numerous sports. The park is an oasis for migratory birds and is therefore popular with outdoor theatrical birdwatchers in the Delacorte Theater, within the park. Among the other events hosted by the park are the finish line of the New York Marathon and the Midsummer party.
