Positano is an Italian town of 3 955 inhabitants of the province of Salerno in Campania, geographically belonging to the Amalfi Coast.
Thanks to the mild climate and the beauty of the landscape, Positano has been a holiday resort since the time of the Roman Empire, as evidenced by the discovery of a villa and further discoveries dating back to 2004. Typical the many steps that from the top of the country they come down to the beach. The main beaches are Spiaggia Grande and Fornillo, both within walking distance; the others are La Porta, Arienzo and San Pietro Laurito, all of which can be reached mainly by sea.
In Roman times it was a holiday resort as evidenced by the discovery of a villa below the church of Santa Maria Assunta. Access to the villa was by sea. From the 10th to the 12th century it was part of the Duchy of Amalfi.
From 1806 to 1860 it was the capital of the homonymous district belonging to the Salerno District of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
From 1860 to 1927, during the Reign of Italy, it was the capital of the homonymous district belonging to the District of Salerno.
