Description
Pigeon Point Lighthouse - 02 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
Pigeon Point Light Station or Lighthouse is a lighthouse built in 1871 to guide ships on the Pacific coast of California. It is one of the tallest lighthouses on the West Coast in the United States. It is still active and is a guard of the Coast Guard Coast Guard for navigation. Pigeon Point Light Station is located on the coastal highway (State Route 1), 5 miles (8 km) south of Pescadero in California, between Santa Cruz and San Francisco. It is a 35 m tall white lighthouse, and its structure is typically New England. Thanks to its location and ease of access, Pigeon Point is one of the most visited lighthouses on the entire coast. Pigeon Point Lighthouse is one of the most picturesque lighthouses on the entire Pacific coast. The tower was built right on top of a rocky promontory and was for a long time a reference point for ships coming from the south that were to reach San Francisco. Pigeon Point takes its name from the Carrier Pigeon ship that in 1853 crashed right on those rocks. The lantern of the lighthouse is no longer equipped with original lenses.
Originally the lighthouse lamp used as fuel for refined lard. In 1888, that lamp was replaced with a lamp that burned kerosene. In 1926 the lighthouse was equipped with electricity.
