Description
Pompei, Italy - 02
Pompeii is an Italian municipality of 25 358 inhabitants of the metropolitan city of Naples, in Campania.
In 80 BC he finally entered the orbit of Rome and Silla moved a group of veterans to the Venerea Colony Pompeianorum Sillana. Tacitus recalls the fight between Nucerini and Pompeiani of 59 AD. in the Roman amphitheater of Pompeii, which encouraged the consuls to forbid all forms of gladiatorial performances for ten years.
In 79 d.C. Pompeii was affected by the eruption of Vesuvius, which buried it under a blanket of pyroclastic materials with a height varying from five to seven meters, determining its end. At the time of the eruption, many buildings were being rebuilt due to the earthquake of 62 AD.
The date of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD is attested by a letter from Pliny the Younger to Tacitus. In the variant universally believed to be more reliable than the manuscript, we can read nonum kal septembres, that is, nine days before the Calends in September, which corresponds to August 24th.
This date had been accepted as safe until today, but some archaeological data gradually emerged as badly agreed with a summer date. For example, the discovery of charred dried fruit, of braziers, used at the time for heating, of aging must still found sealed in containers (dolia) and, above all, of a coin found on the archaeological site, which refers to the the fifteenth acclamation of Titus to emperor, which took place after September 8, 79, suggests that the eruption took place in autumn, probably on October 24 of that year
