Description
Rome, church of Santa Maria della Febbre, 1629 by Pieter Jansz Saenredam
The original artwork is in Public Domain, Courtesy of National Gallery of Art, Washington. Our work consisted in increasing the resolution of the scans without decreasing the image quality and in proceeding, where necessary, to correct and improve colors and shadows.
Santa Maria della Febbre was an ancient Roman mausoleum, converted into a church, just south of San Pietro in Vaticano. As a building it was older than the Constantinian Basilica. The site now lies under the Sacristy. There is a picture of it on Wikimedia Commons here.
It had a twin just to the west, Santa Petronilla which had an attached church called Sant'Angelo in Vaticano, and it is convenient to discuss the three together.
The dedication to the first was to the Blessed Virgin Mary, under her title of "Our Lady of the Fever (i.e. malaria)", of the second St Petronilla, a Roman virgin martyr, and the third St Michael the Archangel.
