The Saguaro National Park is a protected natural area of the United States, located in southern Arizona and is divided into two sections, one about 32 km to the east and the other to about 24 km west of Tucson. Both sections are easily accessible by car and have a visitor reception center.
The total area in 2008 was about 370 km² (91.439.71 acres) of which 234 km² (57.930 acres) of natural environment not significantly modified by man. Both sections of the park are easily accessible by car, while there are no public transportation that reach them.
The park is part of the Sonoran Desert and takes its name from the saguaro, a giant cactus native to this region. There are other species of cacti belonging to the genera Echinocactus, Ferocactus, Opuntia and Cylindropuntia. The park is home to the Leptonycteris yerbabuenae, a species of endangered bat, and the spotted owl (Strix occidentalis).
The area was originally designated as a national monument on 1 March 1933 and was then transformed into a national park on 14 October 1994 by President Bill Clinton. Overall, in both sections there are over 240 km of trails ranging from simple interpretive paths to one-day excursions that go into the most remote areas of the park.
