Description
The great Mosque of Cordoba - 01 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
The great Mosque of Cordoba, today the cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Mary most holy in Córdoba, is one of the main expressions of Arab-Islamic art and of Gothic and Renaissance architecture in Andalusia. It is with the Alhambra of Granada, the Aljafería of Zaragoza and the Giralda of Seville the most prestigious testimony of the Islamic presence in Spain from the eighth century to the thirteenth century.
The building stands on the site where stood the ancient Visigothic church of San Vincenzo, not far from the Guadalquivir. When the Muslims occupied Cordoba in 756 the church was initially divided and used at the same time by Muslims and Christians. Subsequently, the Emir'Abd al-Raḥmān I demolished the Christian church and began the construction of the great mosque. The archaeological excavations conducted by the architect Félix Hernández in 1930 confirmed the existence in the subsoil of the Mosque-Cathedral of an episcopal complex dating back to the 4th and 6th centuries. The archaeological remains of the Visigothic basilica dedicated to San Vincenzo Martire, the episcopal see and the seminary were brought to light. The mosque was enlarged three times by its successors ('Abd al-Raḥmān II 833-48; al-Ḥakam II 962-966;'Abd al-Raḥmān III 929-958; Almanzor 988), ending up covering 23,000 m² and becoming the largest mosque of the Muslim world of that time, destined to become the second only after the construction of that of Sāmarrā', the Abbasid capital pro tempore.
