BMW 320 1978 Silverstone - 01 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
A BMW 320 of 1978 during the Silverstone Grand Prix, in the Group 5 class. It is a legendary car of the German brand that raced and won in the Group 5 European Championship of those years, always fighting against Porsche, that deployed the famous Porsche 935.
Legendary is also the Silverstone circuit, which has a very long history, especially if we talk about Formula 1.
The first Grand Prix was organized in Britain by Henry Segrave at the Brooklands racetrack after his victories in the French Grand Prix of 1923 and the following year in the Grand Prix of Spain which increased interest in the sport. The first edition of the Grand Prix of Great Britain was won by the French team of Louis Wagner and Robert Sénéchal driving a Delage 155B. During the thirties, the race was known as the Donington Grand Prix as it took place on the homonymous track.
It has always been on the calendar of the World Championship since 1950, which was the first officially valid race for the newborn Championship and that took place on the Silverstone circuit. It also took the name of the Grand Prix of Europe, at its 11th edition, and for the first time organized by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC, Royal Automobile Club of the United Kingdom). Although Silverstone is both the historic and current venue (after many changes to the track), the Grand Prix of Great Britain has been held over the years also at the Aintree circuit and at the Brands Hatch circuit.
Before the heavy changes made in 1991, Silverstone was one of the fastest tracks on the Formula 1 calendar. The riders loved the challenge of the fast Copse, Stowe and Club corners. The 1982 world champion Keke Rosberg kept the lap for 16 years fastest qualifying in the history of Formula 1 obtained during the 1985 edition with an average of 258.983 km / h. In the last years Silverstone has been the place of beautiful victories by British riders. In particular John Watson (1981), Nigel Mansell (1987, 1991 and 1992), Damon Hill (1994), David Coulthard (1999 and 2000) and Lewis Hamilton (2008, 2014, 2015 and 2016).
A dispute between the owners of the Silverstone circuit, the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC), and the authorities of the Formula 1 in 2003 on the funds necessary for the works at the circuit facilities led to doubts about the future of the race.
In October 2004 the Grand Prix of Great Britain was left out of the preliminary calendar for 2005 due to the refusal of the BRDC to pay the sum requested by Ecclestone. However, after months of negotiations between the BRDC, Ecclestone and the Formula 1 builders, an agreement was reached to keep the British Grand Prix at Silverstone up to the year 2009. Since 2010, the circus would have had to return, for 10 years, in Donington Park, even if the financial difficulties of the circuit made him fear for the maintenance of the race in the calendar, his move to 2011, or a return to Silverstone.
In the calendar for 2010, presented on September 21, 2009, his move to Donington Park was confirmed. Following the renunciation of the Donington organizers, an agreement was signed between Ecclestone and the Silverstone circuit to host the grand prix of the circuit near Northampton for 17 years.
Despite the controversies and political problems that have surrounded the future of the race in recent years, the British Grand Prix remains one of the main events in the world of motor racing.
