Golden Gate Bridge - Watercolor 04 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge overlooking the Golden Gate, the strait that connects the Pacific Ocean with the San Francisco Bay. It connects San Francisco, on the northern tip of the peninsula of the same name, with the southern part of Marin County. In Marin County, the closest town to the bridge is the small coastal town of Sausalito.

Overall, the bridge, including the up and down ramps, is 2.71 km long; the distance between the towers ("main span") is 1 282 m and the space available under the bridge is 67 m with medium high tide conditions. The height of the two towers is 225 m above the water level. The diameter of the cables of the main suspension is 92.4 cm and each of them is formed by 27.572 cables which, added together, lead to a total length of 128.748 km (equal to one third of the average Earth-Moon distance)
When it was completed in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world and over time has become an internationally recognized symbol of the city of San Francisco.
