Description
P-51 Mustang - 30 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
The North American P-51 Mustang, produced since 1941, was one of the most versatile WWII fighters in the United States. It was deployed both on the Pacific and the European front to counteract the Luftwaffe planes. It was used mainly as a spare fighter for the Boeing B-17 bombers, but also as a bomber fighter. It was also used in the first phase of the Korean War, despite having been overtaken by the first jet-engine aircraft. In some air forces it remained in service until the early eighties. Designed by Edgar Schmued, built and launched in just 117 days, the P-51 was the most important project in history for a fighter plane. In its latest versions it touched the maximum limits reached by a piston engine. It was the product of two cutting-edge technologies: the US aerospace industry and the British motor industry. Among the few who were not satisfied with the plane there were the Soviets. The Mustang was the only type of fighter the USSR refused to acquire under the Rent & Loan law. After careful flight tests, the Soviet Air Force (Voenno-Vozdushnye Sily - VVS) considered it inferior to contemporary Soviet and German fighters and relegated the samples acquired for the tests in flight schools. But elsewhere the Mustang was welcomed: 15,586 specimens were built that operated (during the Second World War) in the air forces of Australia, Canada, China, Great Britain (RAF), New Zealand, the Netherlands, Poland, the United States ( AAC / AAF), South Africa and the Soviet Union. After the world war it remained in service in many countries. It was considered one of the most aerodynamic aircraft of the Second World War, especially for its laminar wing profile. Even today many private specimens located in the various flying museums of the United States are in perfect flight conditions.
