Description
Tuscany vineyards - 01 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
An italian vineyard in the wonderful region of Tuscany, one of the best places of the world.
Various fossil traces of "Vitis Vinifera" found in the travertines of San Vivaldo and near Montevarchi suggest that this plant has been present in Tuscany for at least 2 million years. The activity of winemaking in Tuscany certainly derives from the Etruscans who inhabited central Italy. The wine produced by the Etruscans has remained famous throughout history and appreciated in many areas of the Mediterranean.
The subsequent Roman domination refined the winemaking techniques, and the wine was transformed from a drink of the privileged to a large consumption drink, to the point of being considered as a long-life medical and secret remedy. The increase in vinification contributed to the diffusion of various trades, enhancing the tradition of local artisans and giving a considerable boost to the economy of Tuscany. In the imperial age the wine sector did not develop, recording even a regression in the early Middle Ages for the incessant power struggles. A clear recovery of Tuscan viticulture then took place around 1100 with the birth of vineyards scattered in different areas. In the heart of Florence itself, near Santa Maria Novella, there are Via della Vigna Vecchia and Via della Vigna Nuova.
In 1282 in Florence the wine merchants were formed in the guild of the Art of Vinattieri, and always in that period there were news about the Greco, Trebbiano, Malvasia, Aleatico vines.
In the '500 Sante Lancerio reports the Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the Moscatelli of Porto Ercole and the excellent Montepulciano. In Bacchus in Tuscany, published by Francesco Redi in 1685, it is possible to find further evaluations on the wines of the region. Subsequently, after the middle of the eighteenth century, viticulture and agriculture in general made a qualitative leap with the birth of the Georgofili Academy; member of this association was also Bettino Ricasoli who at the end of '800, in his cellars of Brolio, he studied with which grapes to obtain a more modern wine compared to the ancient "Vermiglio", excessively full-bodied and dense. His business succeeded, making Tuscany the first Italian region to produce a red table wine with characteristics appreciated by consumers. Since then, after the Falerno of antiquity, Chianti is the wine that has known how to obtain the most important international reputation.
