Philadelphia is the sixth largest city in the United States of America and the most important in the state of Pennsylvania. In 2014 it had 1 560 297 inhabitants; while its metropolitan area, also extended to parts of neighboring states of Delaware and New Jersey, reached 5.8 million inhabitants.
Founded in 1682 by the Quaker William Penn, Philadelphia is one of the oldest cities in the United States of America, and between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth was the largest city in the country. At that time, the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the US Constitution were drafted.
Philadelphia stands on the west bank of the Delaware River, and is crossed by one of its tributaries, the Schuylkill; the historical center of the city is included between these two rivers.

Before the arrival of Europeans, in the place now occupied by Philadelphia there was a nucleus inhabited by natives of the Delaware tribe (or Lenape), known as Shackamaxon. The first settlers, led by the Swedish missionary Johannes Campanius, arrived in the area in 1646: in 1669 the area was known as New Sweden but in the years immediately following it quickly passed under British control. When William Penn founded Philadelphian in 1682 (in ancient Greek, fraternal love) he did so with a specific urban plan, hoping that the capital of his new colony (Pennsylvania) founded on the principles of religious freedom and tolerance served as a concrete model of this philosophy . On a practical level, the project followed by Penn left ample space between the buildings, in order to better control the fires and epidemics (which at the time were the most serious problems of big cities like London).
Penn succeeded, and in the second half of the eighteenth century Philadelphia had become the second city of America (after Mexico City) and the British Empire (after London).
Philadelphia was one of the most important centers of the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America (July 4, 1776), as well as the Constitution of the United States (1787) were signed in Independence Hall.
