The Verizon IndyCar Series, (also known simply as IndyCar or, in Italy, as Formula Indy) is the largest American automotive championship for open-wheeled cars.
The current championship, founded by the owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Tony George, began to be held in 1996 under the name of Indy Racing League, in competition with the then pre-eminent CART championship. In controversy with the organizers of this championship, George wanted to create a formula that was closer to the tradition of American motoring and had lower costs. In 2008, the Indy Racing League merged with the Champ Car World Series, direct descendant of the CART, and the series took its current name and appearance.
