Description
Verizon Indycar Series - 35 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
The Verizon IndyCar Series, (also known simply as IndyCar or, in Italy, as Formula Indy) is the largest American automotive championship for open-wheeled cars.
The current championship, founded by the owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Tony George, began to be held in 1996 under the name of Indy Racing League, in competition with the then pre-eminent CART championship. In controversy with the organizers of this championship, George wanted to create a formula that was closer to the tradition of American motoring and had lower costs. In 2008, the Indy Racing League merged with the Champ Car World Series, direct descendant of the CART, and the series took its current name and appearance.
The championship has evolved over the years, completely separating itself from the CART. In 1997, the management decided to change technical regulations, adopting new engines aspirated, compared to the turbos that ran until the previous year, and new chassis. The series took place only on oval tracks, of variable length (from ¾ of mile to 2.5 miles) but since 2005 were also introduced races on road routes, until, from 2010, road tests have become more compared to ovals.
The most important race of the season has always been the 500 miles of Indianapolis. This event takes place since 1911 during the last weekend of May and is preceded by a month of free practice and qualifying.
