Description
Barcelona, Casa Batllo, Watercolor - 01 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
Casa Batlló is a work of the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, which is located in Barcelona, Spain, at number 43 of the Passeig de Gràcia. Considered one of the most original creations of the famous architect, the building was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
In 1904 Josep Batlló, a high-ranking industrialist in the textile sector, entrusted Gaudí with the task of refurbishing a modest building bought the previous year on Passeig de Gràcia, the main artery of the Eixample modernist district, an area elected by the Catalan bourgeoisie. of the period as the seat of its spectacular buildings. The original construction was a very narrow and elongated space with a rectangular shape, which certainly represented a challenge for the Catalan architect.
The work of Gaudí, completed in 1907, greatly changed the appearance of the building, revolutionizing the main facade, expanding the central courtyard and elevating two non-existent floors in the original construction. On the ground floor stood the stables, destined later to warehouses, and the common entrance hall. The first floor of the building, the so-called piano nobile, was used as a dwelling for the Batlló family, while on the other four floors eight apartments were built for rent.
