Description
Barcelona, Parc Guell - 13 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
The Park Güell (in Catalan Parc Güell and Park Güell in its original name) is a public park of 17,18 hectares with gardens and architectural elements located in the upper part of the city of Barcelona, on the southern slope of Mount Carmel. Conceived as an urban complex, it was designed by architect Antoni Gaudí, the leading exponent of Catalan modernism, charged to the impresario Eusebi Güell and inaugurated as a public park in 1926.
The park owes its name to Eusebi Güell, a rich Catalan impresario, member of an influential bourgeois family of the city of Barcelona. A man of great cultural depth, poured into literature, arts, languages and sciences, [1] Güell maintained a fruitful professional relationship and friendship with the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, known in 1878, from whom he designed the palace Güell, the Güell cellars, the Güell pavilions and even a crypt.
The works began in November 1900 and, despite the various delays (fossil remains were found in the site), they proceeded fairly quickly: the subdivision prepared by Gaudí provided for sixty triangular shaped areas in preparation for housing, each of which was equipped with appropriate green areas, which - consistently on the steep slope of the Muntanya Pelada - could have benefited from excellent ventilation and sunshine and a pleasant panoramic view of the center of Barcelona, as well as schools, a chapel and a large park. [4] The project, however, was a real commercial disaster: no one showed interest in this grandiose enterprise, preferring to a still substantially rural area rather the sumptuous buildings of the Eixample, and the urbanization advocated by Gaudí and Güell did not place, so that only one lot was sold. Of the sixty houses initially provided for by Gaudí's turret, only three were built: in one of these, as an indication, the architect himself lived together with the elderly father and his sister's daughter, before the final move to the Sagrada Família yard.
